From Oct 15-18, the Faubourg Lafitte Tenants Association (FLTA) travelled to Louisville, KY to participate in their third Community Leadership Institute conference. Providence Program Lead at Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center and our Resident Outreach & Empowerment Associate both attended the three-day conference with the resident leaders. Members attended many workshops on subjects ranging from community organizing to urban planning to conflict resolution. They also had the opportunity to meet and learn with other Tenants Associations from all over the United States, and found out that many face the same issues. Attendees were also inspired by the stories of success and came back with plenty of new ideas about how to organize and make Faubourg Lafitte as good of a neighborhood as it can possibly be for everyone who lives here. One thing the FLTA particularly found meaningful was the Dorothy Richardson Award Ceremony, when seven individual resident leaders from across America were honored for their contributions to their communities. Look out for some new events and programs coming soon, courtesy of FLTA. One major goal they have this year is to plan and implement a big event focusing on parents and families.
