NEWCITY Neighborhood Partnership
Started in 2007, the NEWCITY Neighborhood Partnership was established by a group of 15 community leaders and partners to maximize the benefits of one of the largest urban renewal projects in history. It served as an informational platform for sharing resources and maximizing the leveraged capacity of community-based organizations in the Tremé/Lafitte, Tulane/Gravier and 7th
Ward neighborhoods during a time of immense investing in the area post-Katrina. Over the course of the partnership’s tenure as many as 80 different groups, ranging from universities and government agencies to neighborhood churches and residents, participated in the sharing of information and resources, discussing issues affecting residents and businesses, and building partnerships upon the existing strengths and historical significance of the community. In total, over $5.2 billion dollars of investment took place in the NEWCITY footprint over the span of 10 years and NEWCITY served as a catalyst for community development in providing a common ground for organizations and residents to meet and explore opportunities for collaborative work.
