COMMUNITY SERVICES SPOTLIGHT: Job Readiness

Adult/Senior Services Coordinator, Claudette Austin, checks the job board at Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center for updates. Increased opportunities for jobs and training program slots have come to Providence and we’re working to get that information out to the community – our job board is just one of those ways.

“The biggest success in our program comes through follow-up”

Dominee Matthews, Program Lead at STNC.

The Job Readiness program at Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center is a collective effort between Providence Community Housing staff, AARP volunteers and resident leaders to provide paths to opportunity for residents and neighbors. Through community partnerships, residents can access resources such as resume preparation and online job search training, interview skills development, Microsoft Office classes, self-paced learning modules, and job counseling related to the specific individual’s skills and interests. Our Adult/Senior Service Coordinator connects individuals searching for employment to opportunities that meet their interest and skill-level, and finds skills-based training programs for those that need additional training before entering the workforce. Resume writing classes are held weekly at Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

We also partner with Start Smart, a locally owned and operated company that provides residents with access to opportunity through Faubourg Lafitte’s Section 3 jobs program. Individuals have been connected to jobs and training programs related to construction trades (welding, plastering, electrical), certified nursing assistants, dialysis tech training and commercial driving.
